I had worked with Wayne Cochran in Miami who was then playing Las Vegas in the same casino where Elvis was, so Wayne knew who JF was and got him in to see Elvis. JF liked to tell, "Wayne knocked on the door and said 'Hey E, there's a southern boy here I want you to meet'". They walked in and Elvis had his back to them "combing his duck tails" posed in front of a full length mirror. Wayne said, "E, this is John Fred with the Playboys from Louisiana." JF said Elvis turned from the mirror, pointed his finger at JF and said, "Boogie Chullen" imitating JF's voice from the first record we made as the Playboys. Fred said he was 'floored'...[The song got airplay on Wolfman Jack's show on XERF and that's where Elvis heard it]. JF said they talked a good while about Louisiana and southern music before Elvis had to go on for his show. [L. Ourso] |

The group shot was taken at Cowboys in Bossier City at a Dale Hawkins' tribute. L to R are D.J. Fontana [Elvis' first drummer in the Louisiana Hayride/Sun and RCA early days. DJ came from the Louisiana Hayride band where Dale and Elvis played regularly.] Next is me, then JF, Dale [of Suzy-Q fame and our record producer for Jewell/Paula,] next is a guy behind Dale I don’t recognize and last, a musician friend of Dale's. I think he's called Pee Wee. [L. Ourso] |
